WHY BE A HEAD COACH?
Head coaches are vital to Little League. In fact, we can't run the league without them. Little League is organized by parents who are passionate about passing it on to the next generation. Coaching is a great way to give back to your community and to give youngsters the leadership they want and need. Last year 17 head coaches led 193 players in Sturgeon Bay Little League.
WHAT DOES A HEAD COACH DO?
- draft players onto your roster -
- schedule & run practices during April/May -
- teach players how to throw, catch, & field -
- make out lineup cards & position cards -
- encourage youngsters to do their best -
- ensure Little League rules are followed -
- haul equipment - buy ice cream - tie shoes -
- give pep talks - show up a little early -
- leave a little late - yeah we do it all!
BUT IT'S WORTH IT!
WHY BE AN ASSISTANT COACH?
Head coaches can't do it all. A minimum of one assistant coach is needed for every team, two is better yet. In softball, often there are players hitting in the cage, while others are fielding, and still others, working on their pitching. It is impossible for the head coach to run all of those areas during our practice month of April. Also during games, we strive to provide a 3rd base coach, and a 1st base coach, and a scorekeeper / dugout supervisor. Even if you think your expertise isn't up to par, often the head coach can provide you with direction while you provide the valuable supervision that Little League requires to help keep kids safely while having fun.
If assistant coaching is not your cup of tea, maybe serving popcorn is. Major League teams must provide one concession stand worker for each game. Concessions typically raise around $2000 per year which helps defray the Sturgeon Bay Little League cost and keep us one of the most affordable rates for youth softball in NE Wisconsin. All the concession items will be in the stand we just need volunteers to sell the stuff and provide a little set up and clean up.
Little League hires home plate umpires for all Senior League, Major League, and Minor League games. Farm League games are umped by the coaches on the field.
VOLUNTEER BASE UMPS
All home teams for Senior, Major, and Minor League are required to supply the base ump. Please communicate with your daughter's coach if you can help ump.
